Five condemned buildings to be demolished Friday

Five condemned buildings in Nairobi’s Huruma estate are expected to be demolished Friday.

According to Public Works Permanent Secretary Paul Mwangi, 15 other buildings earmarked for demolition will be brought down on Monday next week.

According to Mwangi, the buildings had either been built on unsafe grounds, for instance located near rivers, built with poor quality material, or were not approved by the National Construction Authority (NCA).

Other areas targeted include Umoja, Dagoretti, Zimmerman, Marurui, South B, Huruma, Roysambu, Githurai, and Kahawa West.

So far, 36 people have been reported dead, while 70 are still missing, after a building collapsed in Huruma a week ago.

On Thursday, four people among them three women and a man were pulled out alive from the collapsed Huruma building.

Kenya Red Cross Regional Manager Michael Ayeibei said those rescued were in stable condition.

Ayeibei said the operation is still on since there are hopes of finding more people alive under the debris of the six-storey building.

On Wednesday, two owners of the ill-fated Huruma building who had been charged with manslaughter were released on bond.

The prosecution had applied to detain the two, Samuel Kamau and Henry Muiruri Karanja, together with two Nairobi County Government officials and one provincial administrator until the death toll of the tragedy is established before they could face charges.

In her ruling, Milimani Law Courts Principal Magistrate Beatrice Mosiria rejected an application by prosecution to detain the five suspects for 21 days pending investigations before they are charged over the collapse of the building leading to the death of 33 people.
