Five Ethiopians jailed for being in Kenya illegally

By Daniel Kalung’e

Five Ethiopians found guilty of being in Kenya illegally were on Monday sentenced to two months in jail by an Isiolo court.

Appearing before Isiolo Law Courts Chief Magistrate Samuel Mungai, the aliens admitted to the crime saying they were coming to Nairobi to live with their families but did not know it was wrong to be in the country without the necessary documents.

The court heard that on Saturday at around 11pm, army officers intercepted the foreigners at Ngaremara area on the Isiolo – Marsabit road in a vehicle headed for Nairobi.

The officers arrested them, as they did not have documentation to show they were supposed to be in Kenya, and took them to Isiolo Police Station before also impounding their vehicle.

Magistrate Mungai, while giving the ruling, stated that the issue has become very common in Isiolo, further directing that the foreigners be repatriated after serving the sentence.
