Five Family Members Perish as Car Plunges into River

According to Mwea East OCPD Titus Yoma, the accident occurred at around 3am when the personal car, which had 6 passengers, veered off the road and plunged into the river.

It is reported that the six were on their way to Nairobi after attending a funeral in Meru.

Only one person survived the accident, which left two men, a woman and two children dead.

The survivor has been hospitalised at the Embu Hospital.

According to Naphtali, a relative whom they had attended the funeral with, said the deceased family members were travelling back to Nairobi in the early hours of Sunday morning.

He said the driver lost control of the vehicle before plugging into the high velocity river, which is about 10 – 15 metres down.

Kirinyaga County Police Commander David Rono said the driver might have been fatigued, having woken up at dawn and driven to Meru from Nairobi.

The police boss added that investigations have been launched into the accident.

By 3pm, efforts were being made to remove the wreckage from the river, with rocks and the volume of water making the operation difficult.

Police are currently working with area residents to remove the bodies and the car from the river.

The bridge, where the accident occurred, has been marked as a black spot after several accidents were reported to have occurred there.

Last month, four people of the same family were killed after their car plunged into the river.
