Five family members perish in fire tragedy

Five members of the same family died on Sunday morning after a fire razed down their house in Nchaure Village of Imenti North Sub County.

Confirming the incident, Imenti North OCPD Sammy Kosgey said the four included four children and their uncle.

The children had come to visit their grandparents from Nairobi, where their parents were at the time of the incident.

Mr Kosgey said the cause of the fire is yet to be established and police have launched investigations into the 4am incident.

Red Cross officials led by their Mt Kenya Region Manager Gitonga Mugambi were at the scene to counsel relatives of the deceased.

“I received information that there had been a fire and sent Kenya Red Cross volunteers who helped to put out the fire. It was unfortunately too late to rescue any of the people in the house.”

“We are now helping the family in the aftermath, to see if anyone needs to see a doctor or if there is need for any other help,” he said.

Mr Mugambi told Citizen TV that the children’s mother was travelling to Imenti from Nairobi, while the bodies of the deceased have been taken to the Meru Teaching and Referral Hospital.
