Five killed, 13 injured after matatu rolls in Machakos

Five passengers died and 13 others were seriously injured on Wednesday evening in a road accident at Muumandu area on the Wote-Machakos road.

Confirming the incident, Machakos County Director of Emergency Services David Mwongela said the accident involved a 14-seater matatu which veered off the road and rolled several times killing five people on the spot.

It was not immediately clear what caused the accident, however, it is reported that the driver of the matatu, which was heading to Machakos from Makueni, was speeding.

The injured were taken to Machakos Level 5 Hospital where bodies of the deceased were also moved.

Investigations into the incident are underway.
