Five murder suspects set free for lack of evidence in Mombasa

A Mombasa Court on Tuesday acquitted five suspects accused of killing a police officer in Mombasa after the Prosecution failed to provide sufficient evidence.

In his ruling, Justice Edigah Kagoni established that despite the Prosecution providing the gun as evidence, they failed to prove that the suspects were involved in the robbery.

The five; Mwachande Mohammed, Mohammed Salim, Kassim Ahmed, Mohammed Kassim and Ali Omar were charged with the murder of Simon Lochode in 2015.

In addition, they were charged with another count of stealing G3 rifles and ammunition worth Ksh.75,000 that was in possession of the deceased, who was guarding a bank in Bondeni area.

The court further heard how one of the suspects, Mohammed Salim, surrendered himself at Malindi police station after learning that he was among those wanted by the police over the incident.

The other three suspects were arrested in Bumala en route to Busia.

The five have been in custody for more than three years after the court denied them bail.
