Five people arrested over election malpractices in Kajiado Central

The suspects were arrested while trying to bribe voters who had queued to cast their votes in the Kajaido Central by-election.

Three suspects were arrested at Al Huda Muslim Primary school while the two other suspects were nabbed at Saina Primary school.

The suspects have been taken to Kajiado Police Station for questioning as police launch investigations into the case.

Earlier in the day, Orange Democratic Movement (ODM) Director of Elections Mohammed Junet had accused Jubilee Alliance Party members of election malpractices during the ongoing Kajiado Central by-election.

Junet alleged that cases of bribery and ferrying of voters from other regions to take part in the by-election had been witnessed in various polling stations, urging the Independent Electoral and Boundaries Commission (IEBC) to immediately launch investigations into the matter.

The Suna East MP however said that despite the malpractices, ODM will still win the parliamentary seat.

BASELESS ACCUSATIONS

In a quick rejoinder, Kigumo Member of Parliament and chairperson of the parliamentary committee Jamleck Kamau refuted the bribery claims, terming them as baseless.

Kamau said the accusations were an indication that the ODM camp was in panic, adding that they will take legal action against Junet for making such unfounded allegations.

Commenting on the issue, Alfred Keter said JAP members' presence in Kajiado Central is to make sure the by-elections proceed smoothly.

"We are here to ensure the elections go smoothly and nothing else. He (Junet) should not propagate such allegations yet he has no evidence to back him up," he said.

Kajiado Central was forced into a by-election after President Uhuru Kenyatta nominated area MP Joseph Nkaissery into government as the cabinet secretary in charge of Interior and Coordination of National Government.

Nkaissery, who was a member of ODM, has since announced his support for JAP candidate Patrick Tutui who is battling it out with ODM candidate Elijah Memusi and Independent candidate Kuntai Nkashuma.
