Flash floods submerge streets in Kansas City

Residents in Kansas City have been urged to stay off the streets and to take shelter on higher ground after a powerful storm caused flash flooding in the region on Friday night (August 26).

Fast-moving floodwaters covered streets and entered vehicles, prompting multiple water rescues, NBC reported.

Video images showed parked cars partially submerged up to their roofs.

Emergency crews were seen looking into car windows to check for trapped residents. None were found, NBC reported.

Describing the floods as “dangerous and life-threatening”, the National Weather Service asked residents living near rivers and creeks to take immediate precautions and secure their property.

Parts of the city received more than six inches of rain, the National Weather service said.

The storms were part of a severe weather system from earlier in the day, NBC reported.
