Floods displace hundreds of Siaya, Busia residents

At least 169 households have been displaced after flash floods swept across Nyadorera village, Alego Usonga in Siaya County and 639 household in Bunyala, Busia County.

The floods are said to have occurred after River Nzoia burst its banks.

According to the Nyadorera  sub-location Assistant Chief Sylvester Amwok, the residents had been warned in advance but most of them did not take the advisory serious.

Some of the affected families have already been integrated into a Community Resource Center and a church in the neighbouring village while others have moved to different places.

Most residents lost household items while livestock including cattle, goats, sheep and chicken were swept away, with most of them dying.

The assistant chief also said that the water in River Nzoia is currently at 5.3 meters above the normal level and with the heavy rains expected to continue, the levels are expected to go even higher.

The residents are also afraid of a possible cholera outbreak and other water-borne diseases.

Siaya Governor Cornel Rasanga said that the county government is in the process of securing places that will act as rescue centers.
