Floods displace over 1,000 families in Garissa

More than 1,000 families have been rendered homeless after flash floods swept away their houses in Garissa’s Bakuyu area.

The Tuesday night floods after the banks of River Tana busted sweeping through the village.

The families were forced to relocate to safety after the floods damaged their household properties.

Over the last one week, Garissa County has been experiencing heavy rains that have led to increased levels of water in River Tana.

Governor Nathif  Jama said more than 3,000 people are at risk of being marooned by floods should the heavy rains continue.

He called on residents to heed warning by their local leaders and move to higher grounds for their own safety.

Speaking to journalists after visiting the affected area, the Governor said his government is doing everything possible to ensure there is no loss of human life and protection of property during this rainy season.

He also presided over the distribution of non-food items donated by the Kenya Red Cross to more than 400 Bakuyu residents who were earlier displaced after floods struck.

The heavy rains have led to blockage of drainage systems and roads rendered impassible. Residents have lost access to basic amenities such as of schools and hospitals.

“Accessing schools and medical facilities is difficult in this area. Vehicles delivering KCPE exam papers delay as a result of the fast moving water,” said Abdi Mohamed, a resident of Bakuyu.

Residents urged the Governor to unclog the drainage system to avoid outbreak of diseases. They further called on Non-Governmental agencies to chip in by supplying relief food to them.

Last week, 100 goats died and numerous families were displaced after floods swept through Turkana County.
