Flying squad officers impound 8 top-of-the range vehicles in Nairobi

Officers from the flying squad unit have impounded eight high end vehicles that have been circulated by Kenya Revenue Authority (KRA) for failing to follow proper registration procedures and tax evasion.

In a statement, KRA said the vehicles currently held at Nairobi County Police Headquarters were impounded by flying squad on Wednesday while on routine patrol along Mombasa Road following a tip off.

The vehicles are; Land Rover Sport-KAY939L, Range Rover Vogue-KCH956T , Range Rover Vogue -KCG899V, Toyota Land cruiser Prado V8 -KCB786J and a Subaru Forester- KCE219D.

“The five vehicles are part of some 300 vehicles profiled earlier in the year owing to non-payment of taxes and improper registration procedures,” read the statement in part.

“The vehicles have been under investigations for tax evasion and other fraudulent schemes. Some were initially declared as transit cargo but later dumped in the country.”

Speaking to Citizen Digital, flying squad boss Said Kiprotich said the crackdown will continue and warned other motorists whose cars have been deregistered by KRA to surrender themselves to the nearest police station.

In September, KRA de-registered motor vehicle registration numbers of 121 vehicles which were obtained fraudulently, including one belonging to Water Cabinet Secretary Eugene Wamalwa.

This was after KRA and the National Transport and Safety Authority (NTSA) stepped up the search for the cars believed to have been illegally imported and registered in May 2016.

The authority has been cracking the whip on tax evaders.
