Focus on issues, Ruto tells East African leaders

Deputy President William Ruto has asked leaders in the East African region to focus on politics based on issues.

Mr. Ruto said leaders should discourage politics of animosity and focus on issues, which could help improve the lives of the people.

“It is time leaders in this EAC region discourage politics based on race, religion or region,” said Mr. Ruto.

He said politics should not be an avenue of dividing the people on ethnic backgrounds but instead should be used to solve the problems facing the people.

The Deputy President noted that many African countries have lagged behind on matters of development due to bad politics.

“As leaders we should use politics as symbol of unity and not an avenue to divide the people,” he said.

Mr. Ruto dismissed a delegation of Opposition leaders from Uganda who recently visited their Kenyan counterparts to seek help from them on how to win the impending elections slated for next year in their country (Uganda).

“How can the Opposition from Uganda travel to Kenya to seek help from their counterparts on how to win an election and yet they are all losers,’ quipped Mr. Ruto.

“They should have come to consult us (Government) on how to win an election if they were serious in their mission,” added Mr. Ruto.

He said the Jubilee administration shared the same vision as that of the National Resistance Movement (NRM) as it was focused on development and the unity of the people.

The Deputy President at the same time urged East Africa residents to take advantage of the integration of the region to exploit existing business opportunities.

He said the integration of East Africa Community will go a long way in transforming the lives of the people if they exploited the existing business opportunities.

Mr. Ruto said there were ideal business opportunities in the region that could uplift the lives of the lives of the people if fully utilized.

“We have a lot of business opportunities in this region people of Uganda to exploit business opportunities in Kenya.

The Deputy President said the two countries would ensure the joint development projects in the fields of energy and infrastructure were implemented to reduce the cost of doing business.

Speaking during celebrations to mark 53rd Independence Day of Uganda held at Kaunda grounds in Gulu district on Friday, Mr. Ruto said more employment opportunities would be created if the cost of electricity and transport were reduced.

“We are going to implement the reforms being introduced in the EAC region to create more jobs for the people,” said Mr. Ruto.

The Deputy President said leaders from the two countries will work together in ensuring peace and stability is maintained to enable the people concentrate on development activities.

“I want to assure people of Uganda that Kenya is ready and willing to work with your leaders in ensuring peace and stability is maintained in the two great nations,” said Mr. Ruto.

President Yoweri Museveni said the two countries would expand their markets to increase business opportunities.

President Museveni said Uganda was ready to work with Kenya in the implementation of projects, which could reduce the cost of doing business in the two countries.

“Kenya has made remarkable progress in the energy sector and we are going to work together in implementing projects aimed at helping the people.

The DP was accompanied by Endebes MP Dr. Robert Pukose and Kenya’s Ambassador to Uganda Mr. Geoffrey Okanga.
