Forget SGR, your legacy will be the handshake, DP Ruto tells Uhuru

Deputy President William Ruto has told President Uhuru Kenyatta that despite his many milestones as the country’s president, his most notable achievement yet, may be his monumental handshake with opposition leader Raila Odinga.

Speaking during the second and final funeral mass for the late Kenneth Matiba in Murang’a before his Friday cremation, Ruto lauded President Kenyatta for uniting the country by stretching his hand to his long-term political foe, the former Prime Minister.

“Your Excellency President of Kenya Uhuru Kenyatta, when the history of Kenya will be written, your legacy may not necessarily be the Standard Gauge Railway, although it is a great achievement; it may not be the 6.7 million Kenyans that today enjoy electricity in their homes, although it is great; it may not be the 7 million Kenyans today who have NHIF cards in their homes, although it is great,” said DP Ruto.

“… but your legacy will be the courage you had to assemble us and tell us it is possible for us to unite this country.”

The DP further thanked the president for carrying on the message of peace and unity even after Jubilee won the elections.

“Today, your Excellency, you have stretched your hand and we are celebrating the handshake that brings together even those who were in the opposition so that together we can live the dream of Kenneth Stanley Njindo Matiba of a united, peaceful, and prosperous country.”

Ruto also asked leaders to be willing to sacrifice their luxuries that comes with their positions in honor of the late multi-party democracy crusader.

“We owe him that debt, that we too as leaders must sacrifice what is good for us, and our comfort, and our positions, and instead look out to serve 45 million Kenyans in an empowerment program that brings all Kenyans together.”
