Form Four student dies after morning exam

A form four candidate has died after a wall collapsed on him, hours after completing his Wednesday morning exam at Tiekunu village in Limuru.

The 17-year-old student, James Ng’ari Nyambura, is said to have been resting at home after the exam when a wall that was being constructed by a private school near his home collapsed on him.

The deceased’s uncle blamed the proprietor of El Savera School for the incident saying they did not follow proper regulations in their construction work.

Limuru Sub County Education officer Clarence Muita ordered for the immediate closure of the school following the incident.

Meanwhile, Kiambu County Government, through the Limuru Sub County Administrator Patrick Kiongo has said they were going round the county visiting several construction sites and closing down those that have not compiled with the laid down regulations.

Kiongo added that they will still pursue the owner of the school to produce approvals for the construction failure to which he will face the full force of the law.

This incident comes at the backdrop of another incident where one person died and nine others were injured after a storey building they were constructing collapsed in Busia County.

Another building, an eight-storey structure, collapsed in Nairobi leading to the death of at least two people leaving 38 others seriously injured.

National Construction Authority has in the recent past conducted an investigation on the rampant cases of collapsed building with their findings pointing at property developers who bypass building regulations to cut costs and maximize profits.

Architectural Society of Kenya has estimated that 50 per cent of structures in Kenya are not up to standard prompting the National Construction Director Daniel Manduku to give a directive that those involved in constructing houses without following the law to be charged in the Court of Law.
