Shock as student arrested with pistol in Nyanza school

A Form Four student arrested on Tuesday in possession of an illegal firearm at Orero Secondary School in Homa Bay will spend two more days in police custody.

The student was arraigned at the Homa Bay Law Courts where the prosecution requested for more time to finalize investigations and conduct an age assessment to determine if the student is fit to stand trial.

The 17-year-old candidate is reported to have showed the pistol to his fellow students who reported him to the school’s administration.

According to the charge sheet presented in court, police planned to charge the minor with illegal possession of pistol HK45, serial number 25094705
in contravention to section 34(1) of the Firearm Act.

The student revealed to the investigators that he had obtained the American firearm from a relative who lived in the United States but is now a director at the Jaramogi Oginga Odinga University even though the report presented in court said the candidate took it from the relative’s home in Siaya County.

Detectives have since summoned the student’s parents and relative.

The minor is held at the Homa Bay Police Station while the pistol is stored at the Rangwe Police Station.
