Former Meru County CEC charged with abuse of office

Former Meru County CEC William Mutwiri Muraah has been arraigned in court and charged with three counts of abuse of office.

He however denied the charges before Senior Resident Magistrate Stellah Abuya and was released on Ksh.1million bond.

Officers from the Ethics and Anti-Corruption Commission (EACC) had arrested Dr. Muraah on Thursday.

“On November 4, 2015 at Meru Township, being a public officer employed by the county government as the CEC for Health, Dr.Muraah used the office to improperly confer a benefit to Viginia Kawira Nkoroi without the approval of the Meru County Public Service Board,” the charge sheet reads.

Dr Muraa was also charged with improperly conferring a benefit on Doris Kirumba M’Mbui by appointing her as the County Nursing Services Manager in acting capacity without the approval of the Meru County Public Service Board.

Through his lawyer Edwin Kimathi, Dr. Muraah pleaded with the court to release him citing his profession as a doctor in Marsabit.

The advocate further assured the court that his client would appear in court when required.

The Senior Magistrate then ordered that the suspect be released but on condition that he presents a cash bail of Ksh.500,000 or a bond of Ksh.1million with surety of similar amount.

The case is to be mentioned on July 5 and later heard on August 1.
