Former Nairobi Mayor Dick Wathika to be buried

Former Nairobi Mayor Dick Wathika will be laid to rest Saturday at Gikondi village in Mukurweini, Nyeri County.
Wathika died last week on Saturday while being rushed to hospital for treatment.
Leaders and residents are expected to attend the burial ceremony to pay their last respect to the former Nairobi Mayor.
Wathika was first elected as Nairobi mayor in 2004 and clinched the seat again in 2006.
In the 2007 General Election he vied for the Makadara seat under the Party of National Unity ticket where he was declared winner but then former MP Reuben Ndolo challenged his victory in court citing electoral irregularities.
In 2010, Justice Kalpana Rawal quashed Wathika’s win saying that he was not validly in office and the Makadara seat was declared vacant.
Fresh elections were conducted in September 2010 where he lost to Mike Mbuvi Sonko.
Upon his death, President Uhuru Kenyatta described the late former Mayor as a great leader and a reliable friend, who would set aside any political differences when it came to friendship and the country’s development.
