Former President Mwai Kibaki discharged from hospital

Former President Mwai Kibaki has been discharged from a Johannesburg hospital where he had undergone surgery, State House has announced.

In a statement, State House stated that: “President Kibaki is jovial and in high spirit.”

Despite being discharged, the former President will remain in South Africa for a few days as he recuperates.

Kibaki was admitted to Karen Hospital on August 21, before he was flown to South Africa for treatment after he fell ill at his home in Muthaiga.

Kibaki served as Kenya’s President for two five-year terms, from 2002 to 2013, before he was succeeded by the incumbent Uhuru Kenyatta.

The former President was appointed special envoy by United National Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organisation (Unesco).

Several leaders including President Uhuru Kenyatta and CORD leader Raila Odinga have send their message of good wishes to Kibaki as he underwent treatment.
