Former staff sues bank over denial of conjugal rights

A former Barclays Bank of Kenya storekeeper has moved to court seeking damages for wrongful arrest and detention, allegedly facilitated by the bank’s Limuru branch, which later resulted in his retrenchment.

Peter Michobo Muiru filed the petition before the High Court claiming that his arrest denied him conjugal rights for five days and his right to go to church.

Muiru sued the bank and the attorney general, saying he was arrested and held at Tigoni Police Cells for five days over accusations that he had engaged his work colleague in a conversation allegedly to plan to behead the branch manager.

The now jobless former bank staff says no charges have ever been preferred against him and claims his efforts to seek compensation for wrongful accusations and dismissal have been futile since 1995, adding that the bank had dared him to sue.
