Ex-top Mayor, police service commissioner among IEBC chair post applicants

National Police Service Commissioner, Murshid Mohammed, former Mombasa Mayor, Taib Ali Taib, former Transition Authority Chairman, Kinuthia Wa Mwangi, as well as Lawyer Haron Ndubi are among 35 applicants for the post of Independent Electoral and Boundaries Commission (IEBC) chairperson.

The Bernadette Musundi-led IEBC Selection Committee announced the re-advertisement of the post last month after failing to receive satisfactory information from the Ethics and Anti-Corruption Commission (EACC) on the first batch of applicants.

Other applicants include; Prof Sussy Gumo, Eng Moses Onyango Ogindo, Joshua Kamwere Wanjiku, Florence Muoti Mwangangi, Ronald Joe Lubya, Stephen Kiptoo Rotich, Dr Thomas Katua Ngui, Ainea Martin Omuse, John K. Rimberia, Dr Joseph Kariuki Gakuo, Prof Arthur Ashubwe Eshiwani, Tukero Ole Kina among others.

According to the commission, those dropped earlier were asked not to re-apply for the vacancy.

The five shortlisted candidates were David Mukii Mureka, Roseline Odhiambo-Odede, John Kangu Mutakha, Margaret Wambui Ngugi Shava and Kiprop David Malakwen.

The Musundi led committee is deputised by the Chairman of the Supreme Council of Muslims in Kenya, Abdulghafur El-Busaidy.

Together, the two will head the 9-member team mandated with the selection of the next IEBC chair as well as six commissioners.
