Four arrested for practising FGM in Njoro

Four people were on Tuesday arrested after they were found practicing female genital mutilation in Njoro, Nakuru County.

Confirming the arrests, Njoro Deputy OCPD Ms. Gladys Madee said three women and one man were arrested on Monday night during the police crackdown at a house in Tebeswet village in Njoro.

The three women are aged 21, 29 and 30 years.

“We were tipped off by members of the public who alerted us that they (the four) were practicing FGM and that is when we moved in and arrested them,” said Ms. Madee.

The man was arrested on account of being the owner of the house in which the act was being conducted. He is a husband to one of the women.

The Deputy OCPD however said that three other suspects managed to escape the police raid.

According to Ms. Madee FGM is rampant in the region. She says that most girls are forced to undergo the cut during the December holidays.

“Five women underwent the cut last week while one more went through it on Saturday December 2,” said Ms. Madee.
