Four policemen arrested for releasing drug baron in Mombasa

Four police officers accused of releasing a suspected drug baron this morning in Mombasa have been arrested.

The four have been disarmed and are expected to be arraigned at the Mombasa Law Courts.

The incident follows a directive from President Uhuru Kenyatta on the immediate crackdown on drugs dealers and their dens at the Coast.

President Kenyatta had called on local politicians to work with security forces to ensure all drug dens are eliminated in the same manner illicit brews were destroyed in central Kenya and Nairobi.

The president warned drug barons that their vessels, including ships would be destroyed with drugs inside.

Last month, Kenya navy destroyed a yacht that was found carrying 7.5 kilograms of heroin worth Sh29 million.

Three weeks ago, 40 suspects were arrested and 53 sachets of heroin and bhang seized in some parts of Changamwe, Mombasa County after security agencies conducted a crackdown on drugs, in the area.

According to the anti-drug abuse agency NACADA, more than 60,000 people are addicted to hard drugs in Coast, most of them being youths.

The police officers involved in the incident are detained at Makupa Police Station awaiting prosecution.
