Four women arrested after forcing Form Two girl to undergo FGM

Four women were Saturday (December 3) arrested in Kigaa village, Embu East after a Form Two girl reported to the police that they had forced her to undergo Female Genital Mutilation (FGM).

The girl is said to have stormed out of a house where she had been locked up to undergo the cut, rushing to Runyenjes Police Station where she reported the matter.

Police immediately swung into action and apprehended the women who included the girl’s stepmother, the circumciser and two neighbours.

Embu County Maendeleo ya Wanawake Chair Mary Kavinda hailed the girl for the daring move to report the incident.

Ms Kavinda said upon reporting to the incident, police rushed the girl to Runyenjes Level Four hospital since she was still bleeding.

The Maendeleo ya Wanawake Chair lamented that cases of FGM continue to be reported, despite efforts to bring to an end the dangerous practice.

She called upon the Embu County Government to establish a rescue centre for victims of rape, domestic violence and other vices that are outlawed in the country.

At the same time, Kavinda called for re-establishment of a Gender desk across all police stations to enable residents report such incidents occurring in their villages.
