Fraudsters who prey on car buyers charged

Two suspects who were arrested in Nairobi for allegedly being specialised fraudsters in car buying and selling business have been arraigned in a Nairobi court.

Erick Wabwire Ilode alias Elam Wafula and Simon Muchemi Mbuthia alias Michael Wanjohi were presented before Principal Magistrate Peter Ooko where they denied counts of obtaining money from different people with intent to defraud.

It is alleged that the two, together with others not yet arrested, obtained over Ksh.6 million from different individuals in Kilimani and Nairobi CBD, pretending they were in a position to sell them motor vehicles.

They denied the charges and were released on a cash bail of Ksh.700,000 each. The case will be mentioned in two weeks time.

27-year-old Wabwire and Mbuthia, 30, were nabbed on Sunday at a showroom along Kiambu Road following a trap that was laid by officers from the Directorate of Criminal Investigations (DCI), Kilimani Division.

According to a statement from the DCI Kilimani, the operation was conducted after receiving several complaints of the gang’s activities.

The gang reportedly posts messages on social networking site, Facebook, advertising different cars for sale.

The officers, in the statement, have identified some of the Facebook pages as City Importers, City Motors LTD and Direct Importers.
