French government donates food to Mandera residents

Over 500 households in Madera County will benefit from a 20 million shillings grant from the French government that will be channelled through a non-governmental organization.

The hunger alleviation programme will be rolled out next month and extends to April next year.

Speaking during the signing of the convention at the residence of the French ambassador in Nairobi, the NGO – ACTED – country director in charge of Kenya and Somalia Valerie Ceylon said the pact is aimed at addressing the acute food shortage in Mandera.

The food shortage has been caused by the prolonged drought and worsened by insecurity and high number of displaced persons from the neighbouring Somalia.

The French ambassador to Kenya said that the grant is aimed at improving short-term food security of the most vulnerable drought and conflict affected households.

Leaders from Mandera County have welcomed the initiative.
