Friends narrate last moments with deceased KU students

Friends of students who perished on Friday evening in a grisly road accident along the Kisii-Kilgoris road have said they are lucky to be alive after missing out on a road trip that turned fatal.

In their narration, everyone was supposed to contribute Sh2,000 to cater for transport and other logistics on the trip, which some of them could not raise.

Hillary, one of the deceased friends who was supposed to be on the trip, told Citizen Digital that he had only managed to save Sh1000 by Thursday which was not enough to get him a seat to Kisii.

He and two of his friends remained behind and only got updates from a WhatsApp group and Facebook updates from their friends on the trip.

But what they thought was missing out on a road trip to Kisii to an all white party ended up being the sole reason they are alive.

“I woke up on Saturday morning to messages on WhatsApp reading RIP with pictures on Facebook,”said Hillary.

Two of the deceased were Students of Kenyatta University.

Mary Wanjiru Maina and Vinna Isoe along with her twin sister Valerie Isoe who was set to join KU in September this year.

On Thursday, Mary Wanjiru took selfies with Polycarp. She was not feeling too well but had insisted on going for the trip to Kisii saying it would make her feel better because she would be with her other friends.

They would always hang out together and were active on WhatsApp groups, but went silent on Friday evening.

Their rooms at Kahawa Sukari are still locked. They were staying outside the campus premises.

“We are planning to go for the burial, the students union and the university is in mourning,” said Were Sam.

The girls were described as ever jovial and energetic.

They were friends who loved to travel together and their final journey together, as fate would have it, ended in a grisly road accident along the Kisii-Kilgoris road.
