Fund IEBC adequately, Centre for Multiparty Democracy to govt

The Center for Multiparty Democracy (CMD) wants the government to allocate enough funds to the Independent Electoral and Boundaries Commission (IEBC) to enable it discharge its mandate effectively.

CMD chairman Omingo Magara says for IEBC to conduct a credible poll next year, it must be facilitated adequately by the government.

Magara said disbanding the IEBC is not the solution to a credible poll but what needs to be done is restore public confidence in the polls body thus calling for consultations and deliberations on the challenges facing the electoral body.

Addressing the media, Magara further called for proper funding of political parties to enable them address challenges they face especially during party nominations.

The CMD chairman said his team will meet IEBC and political parties to deliberate on election preparedness.

Magara’s statement comes just a day after a Cabinet retreat in Naivasha resolved that the government would prioritize adequate funding of the IEBC to ensure a credible General Election next year.

“First, we all know that there are elections coming. Ours remains a young democracy, and we need to support and strengthen the institutions which uphold it. That’s why Cabinet will fund a number of IEBC programmes, to make sure that the elections go off without any hitch, so that every Kenyan who wishes to choose a leader in 2017 can do so with a minimum of fuss,” said State House spokesman Manoah Esipisu who was addressing the media on the two-day Cabinet retreat chaired by President Uhuru Kenyatta.
