Fury as Mandera residents discover mass grave

A mass grave with five bodies was discovered at a remote village in Mandera County.

Residents of Bambo village were on Tuesday, July 4 treated to the disturbing scenes after herders discovered a grave of recently buried four men and a woman around 9:00 am.

Locals now read mischief from the police, alleging that two of the bodies discovered belong to people apparently arrested by the police last week.

But Police Spokesman, Charles Owino, dismissed claims that the police might have been involved in the murder.

According to Mr. Owino, police have since launched an inquiry into the matter and the details of the shallow mass grave incident are expected in the course of the week.

“If the locals say that some of the bodies belong to people arrested by the police, we have to ascertain if the people were truly police or just a criminal gang. We [the police] need every Kenyan alive and we cannot just kill people. Even if they are suspects, they are better to us alive and not dead,” said the police spokesman.

The bodies were exhumed by locals and later removed to Lafey Hospital Mortuary.

This comes even after two other bodies were discovered in a mass grave at Border Point One area of Mandera County on Friday, June 30.

A section of leaders from the region have condemned the incident, calling upon the government to beef up security in the area.
