Gambia’s President Returns To the Country

Jammeh was said to have been in either France or Dubai during Tuesday's unrest but different sources have now confirmed his return.

The president said that he will remain in charge of the West African state after his security forces crashed an attempted coup against him.

Yahya Jammeh said an ex-army commander tried to take control of the country while he was visiting France.

Jammeh acknowledged the attack and said forces loyal to Lamin Sanneh, who he called a "disgraced" former soldier had invaded Gambia from Senegal  in an attempt to overthrow its legitimate government.

Jammeh seized power in the tiny West African nation in 1994 and is accused of not tolerating any opposition.
