Gambias President Yahya Jammeh Says He Is Incharge
Yahya Jammeh said an ex-army commander tried to take control of the country while he was visiting France.
Jammeh acknowledged the attack and said forces loyal to Lamin Sanneh, who he called a "disgraced" former soldier had invaded Gambia from Senegal in an attempt to overthrow its legitimate government.
He said the attackers were quickly repelled with security forces killing four of them and capturing four more.
"Rest assured that the enemies of the people have been defeated," the President said in a statement.
However, international media reports say that his current whereabouts are still unclear.
Jammeh’s statement comes a day after an unsuccessful coup by a group of Gambian soldiers.
