Garbage collector caught on camera with gun arrested: DCI

A man whose picture started circulating on social media showing him picking garbage with a gun in Nairobi’s Pipeline estate has been arrested.

According to the Directorate of Criminal Investigations, the ‘garbage collector’ was seized on Friday after the matter was brought to their attention by Kenyans on Twitter (KOT).

A man who was photographed armed & the matter brought to our attention has been arrested & will be charged accordingly.

“We thank #KOT for bringing this matter to our attention & for additional information that we received through DMS. Let’s work together to keep our country safe,” DCI said on Twitter.

The post from the DCI however did not indicate the identity of the man or what he will be charged with.

In Kenya, being in possession of a firearm without a license can attract a jail term of not less than seven years.

Kenyans on Twitter are known for calling out those they perceive to be breaking the law.

Last week, a woman was arrested for filming traffic officers who were harassing a female passenger in Nairobi.

The move caused uproar with Kenyans on Twitter demanding for her release under the hashtag #ReleaseNjeri.

Sophia Njeri had been taken to the Kasarani Police Station and was to be charged with ‘obstruction in the execution of duty’.

She was released later the same day.

“Dear Kenyans of good faith, thank you so much for your support and prayers. My fellow passengers and I were released at around 6pm on a cash bail of Ksh.10,000 each. We are required to be in Madaraka court on Friday 8, 2019 for the charges,” she wrote on her Facebook page.

Reports indicate that the charges were later dismissed as the Office of the Director of Public Prosecution noted that it was not a crime to record police discharging their duties.
