Police officers decry mistreatment in fresh transfers

A total of 24 junior police officers in Garissa County have protested their transfers from the area to Mandera County on claims of misconduct and indiscipline terming it mistreatment.

The officers accused the regional police commander Patrick Mwanzia of usurping the powers of the National Police Commission by transferring them without authority from the Johnston Kavuludi led commission.

They further complained that they were transferred to North Eastern Region counties, arguing that they had served over four years in the area which is far from their families.

Speaking to Citizen Digital, an officer who spoke on condition of anonymity said that the transfer letters came on December 30, 2015 for 24 officers who were accused of being undisciplined.

He noted that they were not given transport or disturbance allowance for the move and stated that the 24 were removed from the duty roster to force them to report to their new stations.

He wondered why they were transferred in January as they have families to take care of.

“We are wondering who gave the order to transfer us,” he posed, adding that they have been out of work since the letters arrived.

Efforts to reach the North Eastern Regional Police Commanders who signed the transfers proved futile as his phone went unanswered for the better part of the day.
