Garissa University to re-open soon – DP Ruto

Deputy President William Ruto has announced that the government will soon re-open Garissa University following its closure in April this year after a terror attack.

Speaking during a tour of the institution, Ruto reaffirmed the government’s commitment to ensure that learning resumes at the institution, saying that the incident strengthened the resolve to fight against terrorism and the nation’s unity.

“As government we will not play into the hands of Al Shabaab and, if anything, the incident has strengthened our resolve as Kenyans to fight terrorism and we are now more united than ever as a nation,” noted the DP.

He stated that Moi University’s Senate and the cabinet secretary for Education, Fred Matiangi, would meet within the next two weeks to work on modalities of how the university will be re-opened.

Ruto added that the construction of a police station with adequate personnel inside the university, whose renovation is nearing completion, would go a long way in ensuring security for the students and the university fraternity.

He thanked the residents for the support they accorded the security team led by the Regional Coordinator Ambassador Mohamud Saleh that has seen great improvement of security in the region.

Garissa University, a Moi University constituent college, had a population of 800 students, with a majority of them taking education courses, when gunmen entered its premises and shot dead 148 students before they were themselves shot dead by security officers.
