Gatundu residents protest increasing accidents

Residents of Handege shopping centre in Gatundu South, Kiambu County on Tuesday, June 27 night protested and blocked the Gatundu-Karinga -Flyover Road demanding that speed bumps be erected.

This was after an elderly man was knocked down by a speeding vehicle on Monday night.

Speaking to reporters during the protest, the residents said that the Gatundu- Flyover Road is a project that was started by President  Uhuru Kenyatta when he was the area Member of Parliament but the contractor did not erect bumps near the shopping centres or schools.

“We appreciate the road since it has opened business opportunities in this area but it is taking away our families through accidents. We have gone to the Ministry of Roads office in Gatundu and also the contractor but nothing has been done,” said a businessman at the shopping centre.

The residents barricaded the road throughout the night and erecting temporary bumps.

They now want the Kenya National Highway Authority to erect speed bumps to reduce the number of accidents.
