Gem residents lynch suspected cattle thief

A 48-year-old suspected cattle thief was lynched by irate mob at Kowil village in Gem Sub County.

According to North Gem chief Barrack Otieno Opondo, the man, identified as Joseph Owino Mugwa, was found in possession of a bull and some household items suspected to have been stolen.

Chief Opondo told Radio Ramogi that the suspect, who hails from that village, stole a cow in that same area before disappearing for a while. He resurfaced Thursday evening with a bull suspected to have been stolen from a neighbouring village.

The angry residents descended on the man beating him mercilessly despite his asking for forgiveness.

The Chief has, however, cautioned members of the public against taking the law into their hands, noting that they should take suspects to the police instead of killing them.

The suspect’s body has since been removed to Yala Sub-County Hospital mortuary.
