Gender Bill remains unaddressed as Parliament adjourns

The National Assembly is set to adjourn its sittings Wednesday evening to pave way for the August 8 General Elections, having passed 180 bills, adopted 50 motions, concluded 124 petitions and handled over 50 questions on various issues.

National assembly speaker Justine Muturi and Majority Leader in the National Assembly Aden Duale say they are proud of the 11th Parliament for passing important bills.

The Gender Bill, however, remains unaddressed as Parliament failed to raise the requisite 233 members to debate the legislation.

Mbita MP Millie Odhiambo said that that Parliament had failed the women of Kenya, with Duale adding that despite trying six times the House failed to show commitment to dealing with the law.

Protracted political battles between the ruling Jubilee coalition and the Opposition over nominees to the East African Legislative Assembly (EALA) will leave Kenya unrepresented at the assembly.

The House also amended the standing orders to accommodate the anticipated influx of independent MPs to establish the special funds committee to oversight the political parties fund, the national government constituency development fund as well as the women and youth funds.

This committee will be chaired by an independent member. The house also slashed the number of members in parliamentary committees from 29 to 17.

Members of Parliament can, however, be recalled before August 7 should the need arise.
