Giants fall as vote counting continues in Uganda

Uganda’s Vice President Edward Kiwanuka Ssekandi is among 10 senior government officials who have fallen by the wayside in the just concluded Uganda elections.

Kiwanuka, who has been the Vice President for the last two terms of President Yoweri Museveni’s presidency, was trounced by the National Unity Platform wave under Robert Kyangulani popularly known as Bobi Wine that swept central Uganda.

Trade Minister Amelia Chambade has also lost her seat in the hotly-contested parliamentary elections.

Cabinet Ministers Judith Nabakoba (ICT), Christom Muyingo (Higher Education), Erioda Tumwesingye (Science and Technology), Betty Kamya (Lands), Rosemary Sseninde (Primary Education), Isaac Musumba (Urban planning) and Florence Nachiwala (Youth Affairs) have all lost.

Government Chief Whip Nakabirwa Ruth has also been floored in the just-concluded elections.

Bobi Wine and his NUP party appear to be doing well in Central Uganda while President Museveni has held on to his Northern and Western strongholds.

Uganda’s President Yoweri Museveni took an early lead in the presidential election race, according to preliminary results released on Friday morning by the electoral commission.

His rival Bobi Wine, however, disputed the results, claiming there was widespread rigging and election irregularities in the polls.
