Gideon Moi: I will reject Cabinet post

Baringo Senator Gideon Moi has said he will reject a cabinet position if nominated to any portfolio by President Uhuru Kenyatta.

Speaking at parliament buildings after being elected chairperson of the senate committee on ICT on Tuesday morning, Mr. Moi distanced himself from the cabinet formation speculation saying that he has a duty of serving Baringo residents who elected him into office.

“I have not been offered a cabinet position and if offered one I will not take it because I have a mandate to serve the people of Baringo with commitment and dedication for the next five years,” said Mr. Moi.

When asked by a journalist whether he is playing any role in the constitution of the Cabinet, the KANU chairperson said, “I am playing no role whatsoever.”

This comes after President Uhuru Kenyatta axed thirteen cabinet secretaries and nominated former Marsabit Governor Ukur Yatani, Ex-Turkana Senator John Munyes and former Director of Public Prosecutions Keriako Tobiko to his new look cabinet on Friday, January 5.

Mr Moi, the son of Kenya’s second president Daniel Moi, has been proposed as a possible presidential candidate in 2022 and political analysts had also mooted him as a possible cabinet nominee as the president seeks to secure his legacy in his second and final term.

He also said that he hopes to hit the ground running as soon as possible after his election as the chairperson of the senate committee on ICT.

“First and foremost we want to look at what was there before as we draft the cybercrime bill. We would also like to do an audit of some of the technology that is currently being used,” said Mr. Moi.

He also said that the committee will probe why ICT is not benefitting Kenyans in certain parts of the country adding that his goal is to ensure that Kenya becomes the ICT hub in Sub-Saharan Africa.
