Gikomba fire: Death toll rises, postmortem set for Monday

The death toll from the Gikomba market fire has risen to 16 after a child died while undergoing treatment at the Kenyatta National Hospital.

The number of the injured currently stands at 57 with eight people in critical condition as doctors race against time to save them.

15 people died and 70 others sustained serious burn injuries after a Wednesday dawn fire razed sections of the popular and expansive market in Nairobi.

Investigations still ongoing with the Directorate of Criminal Investigation (DCI) investigating possible causes.

There are plans to move the bodies to Chiromo mortuary as postmortems are set to be conducted on Monday.

Fire tragedies are not new to Gikomba market, they are seemingly an annual occurrence with some city leaders are reading mischief.

The question of who is responsible and why, is yet to be answered but many believe they are forces out to try and kick the traders out of the place.
