Girl, 7, crushed to death by teacher’s car

A seven-year old pupil was crushed to death in a freak accident when a car driven by a teacher rammed into her and her mother.

Belvin Chelangat, a class one pupil at Jamhuri Primary School in Nakuru, was run over at 7.30am just a few moments after she entered the school gate in the company of her mother.

According to family members, the vehicle was being driven by the school’s deputy headteacher who is said to be a learner driver. She was rushed to hospital where she was pronounced dead on arrival.

It’s suspected that the teacher accelerated the Toyota Fielder instead of applying breaks knocking down Chelangat, her mother and another pupil. The two have since been discharged from hospital.

Philip Koech, the deceased’s uncle accused police of releasing the vehicle to the owner less than three hours after the accident occurred.

Nakuru OCPD Joshua Omukatta defended his officers from the accusations saying that once they got all the necessary evidence, they had no reason of holding the vehicle. The teacher has since recorded a statement.

The body of the girl was moved to Valley Hospital mortuary.

Emilly Owuor, an aunt to the deceased called on the ministry of education to follow up the matter and ensure justice is done.
