Girl recalls how police killed 9-year-old Stephanie Moraa

A Nairobi court has began an inquest into the death of Stephanie Moraa, a nine-year-old girl who was shot while she played on the balcony of their house in Mathare North-Area II in Nairobi after the August 2017 General Election.

The Investigating officer and prosecution counsel led the court to the scene of the shooting to allow the first witness, a minor, an opportunity to show and demonstrate each and every word she told the court for purpose of clarity.

At the scene, the minor led the mobile court under a security light pole, where she saw an officer aim up the balcony where she stood as the deceased and other kids were playing.

At the time the officer was aiming, the witness, who was standing on the balcony spotted the officer aim a gun at them and shouted to her friends with her on the balcony to take cover.

Unfortunately, the bullet struck Stephanie Moraa going through her chest and hit a wall leaving a mark.

The 15-year-old witness also led chief magistrate Francis Andayi and others to the actual spot where the body of late Stephanie laid motionless after she was shot.

“Stephanie aliposhutiwa, alianguka hapa akashikilia miguu ya Moses, alimuita mara tatu, mikono yake ikalegea na akmuachilia,” narrated Diana(not her real name). (When Stephanie was shot, she fell here and held on the leg of Moses, she called him three times and loosened her grip.)

The court adjourned the matter to April 14, 2018 when more witnesses including Stephanie’s parents are expected to testify.
