Gitura says disrupting county functions primitive

Senate deputy Speaker Kembi Gitura has condemned an incident in which hired goons and recovering addicts disrupted the operations of the Murang’a County Assembly.

Gitura said what transpired on Thursday was primitive and very indecent in the devolced era.

He said such primitive, parochial and myopic selfish actions should not be allowed to disrupt the agenda of Murang’a County and called for political tolerance at all levels.

He noted that it was too early to politic saying that 2017 politics should not be allowed to come into play in matters of development of Murang’a County.

Gitura, who is also the area Senator, said that there were many questions seeking answers concerning the Ksh 2.5 billion county debt to suppliers that if not checked would compromise the operations of the county.

He said by the county assembly asking questions touching on the county’s expenditure should not be construed as fight against the county government or its officers as the assembly has an oversight role.

On Thursday, drama ensued in Murang’a town after a group of rowdy goons pitched camp outside the Murang’a County Assembly blocking the Members of County Assembly (MCAs) from accessing the premises.

The alleged hired goons intent was to disrupt the operations of the house which was tabling a motion of impeachment against the County Executive Committee Member in charge of Finance, ICT and Planning Mr. George Kamau for alleged incompetence and mismanagement of county resources.

Police officers manning the gate to the County Assembly had a tough time trying to contain the situation after recovering alcoholics from the Ihura Stadium Rehabilitation Centre joined the scuffle forcing the security officers to use tear gas to disperse them.

The unrest came just days after a report released by the Murang’a Executive Committee Member for Finance and Planning George Kamau indicated that the county owes suppliers and contractors more than Ksh 2.5 billion from 2013.
