Google celebrates 21st birthday with doodle of throwback computer

Google is celebrating its 21st birthday with a throwback doodle of an old computer.

The Independent noted how Google was invented by two students; Larry Page and Sergey Brin.

“Page and Brin chose the name Google for their new project because it recalled the word ‘googol’ – a mathematical term meaning ‘10 raised to the power of 100’,” the Independent said.

The two PhD students worked on the project initially known as Backrub from their campus dorm room.

Their intent was to reportedly organize the world’s information on an easy and accessible platform.

Initially, Yahoo and Jeeves search engines gave Google a run for their money.

However, today, Google is the most popular search engine with reportedly over 60,000 searches per second.

The word ‘Google’ was added to the Miriam Webster and Oxford dictionaries in 2006. It is now commonly used to mean ‘search’.

Google now owns YouTube, smartphone (Pixel), smart speaker (Google Home) and and mobile computer hardware sectors, the Economic Times said on Friday.

The tech company is said to be worth more than Amazon and Apple combined.

“As of this year, Google’s estimated net worth is around $300 billion and its parent company is worth approximately $900 billion,” the Economic Times reports said.
