Govt Formulates New Education Policy

To achieve this objective, the President Uhuru Kenyatta said, the Government has raised the allocation for free tuition in secondary schools by 33% to Ksh. 28.2 billion in its budget unveiled this week.

“The aim, as I said, is to make education truly free within three years,” he affirmed.

President Kenyatta speaking during the Golden Jubilee at Othaya Boys High School said the Basic Education Act, 2013 gives legal authority to the Government’s policy and a road map for development of education in the country.

President Kenyatta further said the Jubilee Government has identified five other key priority areas which are key to achieving the national development agenda.

These are food security in which the Government has set aside 9.5 billion for irrigation and Ksh 8.5 billion for dams and water pans, the health sector with an allocation of more than Ksh. 47
billion of which Ksh.4 billion will go to the free maternal childcare project.

Others are care for the most vulnerable members of the society where Ksh. 7.2 billion has been set aside for orphans and children, and Ksh. 4.9 billion for the aged.

The Head of State also said the Government will ensure access to affordable credit for the young people who do not have any credit history through the Uwezo Fund and other credit facilities.

Also in attendance was, Nyeri Governor Nderitu Gachagua, Education Cabinet Secretary Prof. Jacob Kaimenyi and several Members of Parliament.
