Govt Imports Sugar To Curb Shortage

Agriculture Cabinet Secretary Felix Koskei says there is serious sugar shortage in the country hence the need for importation.

Speaking while opening the Kitale Ask Show, Koskei told off leaders opposed to the move adding that the country has only 6,300 metric tons of sugar currently against a daily consumption of 2,000 metric tonnes.

Also present were Trans Nzoia Governor Patrick Khaemba, Senator Henry Ole Ndiema and MPs led by Ayub Savula who were all opposed to the move.

The leaders accused sugar cartels of upsetting government efforts to protect consumers.

The leaders further intimated that importation will hamper sugarcane farming in western region.

The leaders are now threatening to move to court to block sugar importation.
