Government revives NYS projects countrywide

Public Affairs, Youth and Gender Cabinet Secretary Sicily Kariuki has re-launched the suspended Kibera slum upgrading project in Nairobi.

Speaking during the re-launch, the CS said that the NYS projects have now been streamlined to ensure sustainability.

The projects will now be re-introduced in 72 other constituencies and are set to benefit over 91,000 youth who were registered afresh in January using Biometric registration and payment moved to Visa cards to eliminate corruption.

In January, President Uhuru Kenyatta ordered the newly appointed NYS Director General Richard Ndubai to revive youth programmes.

The Kibera project had enlisted nearly 4,000 youth involved in construction of roads, drainage systems and cleaning up the slum.

The project had also been replicated in Korogocho, Mathare and Mukuru Kwa Njenga slums in Nairobi, as well as Obunga and Manyatta Slums in Kisumu before it was suspended.

The youth were saving 30 per cent of their daily earnings into their saccos. The NYS projects had been suspended across the country following corruption scandals that had rocked the service.

This also followed revelations of fraud running into more than one billion shillings in the tendering process resulting in the forced resignation of then Devolution CS Anne Waiguru.

The others who were also forced out of office are  PS Peter Mangiti and NYS Director General Nelson Githinji with cases linked to the scam currently in court and others being probed by EACC.
