Government suspends second generation brews in the country

The government has banned the sale of second generation brews in the country in a bid to tame alcohol-related deaths.

In a statement signed by Interiors Cabinet Secretary Major Gen (Rtd) Joseph Nkaissery and Council of Governors Chair Peter Munya, a joint effort between the county and national governments will be carried out to eradicate alcohol abuse.

“Under the Constitution, the function of control and regulation of alcohol and drug abuse has been devolved to counties,” read part of the statement.

“With a view to eradicate to eradicate alcohol abuse, County Governments shall in consultation and cooperation with the National Government co-ordinate the prevention, early detection and management of alcohol abuse through education, advocacy  empowerment and enforcement mechanism.”

According to the statement, most County Governments have already put in place appropriate regulatory measures through a legal framework to ensure safe production, manufacture and sale of alcohol.

“These laws restrict alcohol availability in order to reduce consumption and related harm among young people”.

The regulatory policies to be implemented include setting a minimum legal purchase or drinking age, restricting the types of alcoholic beverages sold in stores and restricting the density of stores selling alcoholic beverages in a given area.

Other policies are the restriction of the hours of business when alcohol can be sold, mandatory training of alcoholic beverage servers, and increasing the price of alcohol.

The legal frameworks is set to be enforced by both the National and County governments to ensure no alcohol that does not meet the required standards is sold
