Government to construct a mega dam in each county, says CS Wamalwa

Devolution Cabinet Secretary Eugene Wamalwa has urged Governors to set aside land for construction of a mega dam in their respective counties.

Wamalwa said that food sufficiency is part of the government’s ‘Big Four’ agenda and it involves construction of one mega dam in each of the 47 counties.

Speaking in Maralal after visiting Arsim Village in Samburu North Sub-County, the CS said the construction of these dams will cost the government over Ksh.30 billion and will help in the collection of rain water for domestic and livestock use.

Wamalwa added that construction had already begun in some counties and urged governors to prioritize the setting aside of land for the project which is a drought mitigation measure to ensure food security in the country.

“The government has started construction in some counties such as Sio Murun Dam in Pokot which will cost Ksh.9 billion, Badasa Dam in Marsabit County as well as the Isiolo Dam to help in the collection of excess rain water.” He said.

The CS further urged the people to move to higher grounds during the ongoing rainy season so as to prevent the loss of life. This was after houses were swept away by floods on Tuesday night leading to the death of two women and a child.

He mentioned that the government will set aside more relief food to be disbursed in arid and semi-arid counties.
