Government urged to increase capitation for persons with disabilities’ schools

Plan International, a children rights organization, has challenged the government through the Ministry of Education to increase capitation for schools handling persons with disabilities.

Plan International Bondo Project Unit Manager Phitalis Were, while addressing a meeting at Nyamone home for the physically disabled, said the increased capitation will help enhance sustainability and running of such institutions.

“The government both at the national and county levels need to see how they can develop a mechanism for sustaining such institutions,” he said noting that such institutions face challenges ranging from lack of proper food, clothing, shelter and learning and mobility aids.

Mr Were also pleaded with parents of children with disabilities to ensure they effectively play their parental roles by offering equal treatment to all their children in terms of education opportunities and other social aspects.

He noted that most parents have often neglected children with disabilities saying that this makes the situation worse for them.

Were also encouraged children with disability to come out and disabuse the notion that persons with disabilities are lesser beings.

He reminded them that the fact that they are disabled does not mean they cannot be successful like any other person.

The Plan International staff donated food and clothing worth Ksh 150,000 under their Corporate Social Responsibility program dubbed ‘Touching lives’ to benefit over 50 pupils in the institution.
