Governor announces plans to re-introduce free milk in schools

Murang’a Governor Mwangi wa Iria has announced plans to introduce free milk in all primary schools in the county as a way of boosting morale among students.

The free milk programme began in 1979 during the reign of former President Daniel arap Moi, then known as maziwa ya nyayo, before it ground to a halt in 1996 due to apparent lack of funding and logistical support.

In what has been perceived as a new wave of promises aimed at ensuring his re-election bid succeeds, the governor further announced that he will initiate a free education system in all nursery schools to complement the government’s free primary education programme.

In a bid to boost the transport sector, Governor Mwangi wa Iria flagged off five commuter buses which will ferry people on the Nairobi-Thika-Kabati route.

This new development, according to Governor wa Iria, is geared towards decongesting Nairobi County after Murang’a County was last year put under Nairobi metropolitan.

He noted that the national government has factored in special services in Murang’a County that include improvement of infrastructure, water and electricity, adding that a new metro-train is scheduled to pass through the county to improve connectivity between Nairobi and Murang’a.

Governor wa Iria has gone through a tumultuous reign that has seen several attempts by the County Assembly to impeach him fail.

Early this year, Mwangi’s home was raided by detectives from the Ethics and Anti-Corruption Commission over apparent links to corruption.
